Chiharu Shiota is truly a worldwide artist. Having been born in Japan and later moving to Germany after having studied in Australia and a teaching stint in America, and exhibiting in even more countries, Shiota is equally as dynamic as her artwork.
Her work usually involves the use of black thread woven meticulously for effect. Sometimes hauntingly so, as she did with her installation of an abandoned apartment that had belonged to an elderly woman in Berlin. She creates a space for audiences to interact and engage with rather than simply observe. Sometimes adding music in the background to achieve a visceral effect.
