As many of us gather around our grandparents’ TVs to watch “Home Alone” and maybe even “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” (though never the atrocious Home Alone 3 or 4), Macaulay Culkin himself has delivered a vaguely related alternative – the first official video from his pizza-themed Velvet Underground-inspired band The Pizza Underground. Though the live experience of Culkin’s experiment apparently leaves much to be desired, the concept behind The Pizza Underground still inspires a limited but quantifiable amount of joy.
Directed by Adrian Arredondo, the clip is – of course – inspired by the visual aesthetic of The Velvet Underground’s “I’m Waiting for the Man,” with Arredondo even going so far as to film it all in VHS. In an interview with Vice surrounding the filming of the video last year, Arredondo was quick to point out the logistical difficulties of the project. “Who the fuck wants to wear pizza on their face, onscreen, and sing or play solos? When I [told the band that], there was dead silence and no one said a word.” You can watch the finished video via this link, and revisit the Warhol-referencing clip of Macaulay Culkin eating a slice of pizza below.
