The art of Yulia Brodskaya might look like beautifully detailed illustrations, but upon further inspection Brodskaya’s true medium is paper.
Each piece contains hundreds of pieces of paper rolled and shaped and glued to a background. This technique is called paper quilling. And while at first Brodskaya says she thought it might be limiting, she quickly found out the opposite was true.
Most of her work portrays elderly people. Brodskaya says this is because once people die, all that we have left to hold onto is a physical thing such as a piece of clothing. While the face fades away, those tangible things help us to recall the entire person.
