Music Biopics That We Didn’t Know About

There are several biopics about music icons that are in the works, or set to release soon. From Janis Joplin to Mikes Davis, the silver screen is going to get musically enhanced with these upcoming films.

1. A Janis Joplin biopic has been in the works since 2011. After a string of rumored actresses to play the role, such as, Zooey Deschanel, Lili Taylor, Nina Arianda and even singer, Pink, casting finally decided to use Amu Adams to play Joplin. Filming has already began, but had been recently paused due to a lawsuit between the producers and the investment firm for the film. The inspiration for the biopic stems from a Rolling Stone article where Joplin was shadowed for a series of concerts.

The film will hopefully continue production once legal issues have been settled.

2. For years, a Kurt Cobain biopic has been in the works, but nothing has been completed or officially released since the lead singe of Nirvana died over 20 years ago. Wife, Couryney Love teased fans in various interviews concerning production and casting in 2014, but an official production date has not been released. Rumors of Jared Leto playing Cobain, as well as other potential actors up for the role have been floating around, but nothing confirmed.

However, a trailer of film, Soaked In Bleach, was leaked in April of 2014. If this is the film Love has been working on in honor of her late husband? Only time can tell.

3. As a short-lived, brilliant musician, Jimi Hendrix is an artist that music fans have inquired about for decades. To sum his superstardom in a film, is intimidating. But not too intimidating for director, Paul Greengrass, who had recently been granted access to Hendrix’s discography for the film.

The film is anticipated to be more successful than this past year’s Hendrix biopic, Jimi: All Is By My Side, where Andre Benjamin played Hendrix. The film did not use any of Hendrix’s original music, and focused on his pre-stardom life.

Anthony Mackie has been chosen to play the late rockstar. The film does not have a set release date yet.

4. NWA is one of the most intimidating hip hop groups, and music fans have been wanting to know the full story of their stardom since their peak in the ’80s and ’90s. The film, Straight Outta Compton, is set to hit movie theaters August 14, 2015.

The movie features many emerging actors, including member, Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson. The film will depict the group coming together and their rise to musical fame and social notoriety.
