On May 11, 2015 Kanye West was presented an honorary doctorate at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The “College Dropout” finally made it to his graduation day. In light of this monumental graduation day for West, as well as us being in the midst of graduation season, here are seven facts you didn’t know about this notorious album.

1. Kany West’s car accident inspired the formation of the album.

After his car accident in 2002, West wrote the lyrics to his track, “Through The Wire,” one of the most notable tracks off of the album.

2. The College Dropout bear was pure coincidence.

According to Plain Pat, the mascot just happened to be at the school where the album cover was shot. According to him, a bear was never a part of the original concept.

3. Dave Chapelle could have been Jesus.

Apparently, Dave Chappelle was invited by Kanye to play the role of Jesus in his “Jesus Walks” music video. Dave declined for unknown reasons.

4. “All Falls Down” originally would have sampled Lauryn Hill.

The popular track was to feature samples of soulful songstress Lauryn Hill, but when the deal fell through, Kanye’s connection with singer, Syleena Johnson came through. She was the featured vocals on the track instead.

5. College Dropout was rejected by many record labels.

At the time of the formation of College Dropout, Kanye was still mainly recognized as a producer. The content of the album was so unique from what other rappers were releasing at the time that many did not want to take the chance. Luckily, Roc-A-Fella records were not afraid of the album’s use of religion context, or critiques of the educational system. They accepted the album and Kanye as a true artist.
