“Artist” Richard Prince has been in trouble for re-mixing other artists work before.
But copyright issues are part and parcel of what he apparently wanted to test when he opened put on an entire exhibition of other people’s Instagram photos last fall at the Gagosian Gallery in New York.
It didn’t raise too much of an outcry at the time—but now that those pieces are selling for $90K a pop, the original artists of the Instagrams have taken offense. And come up with genius solutions to undercut his prices.
Most notably, the Suicide Girls are selling their own replica of the same piece, at a fraction of the cost, and with all proceeds going towards the Electronic Frontier Foundation for exploring digital copyrights.
